What Types of Lobby Signs Are There?

Since 1979 Signs Manufacturing has been building lobby signs and reception area signage. We know that the first impression you give your customer sets the basis for your relationship with them.

Lobby Signs come in several basic varieties:

• Basic - Routed or Formed Plastic Letters
• Good - Aluminum / Stainless Letters, or Glass-Backed Signs

In addition, there are other options for combining different sign types depending on what you would like your logo to communicate.

Combining Sign Types

These options are not independent of one another. We can fabricate a lighted logo, with stainless steel letters underneath, formed plastic letters on top of those, and put it all on a painted aluminium back panel shaped to the sign.

These new-style lobby signs, which we manufacture, have LEDs encapsulated in solid plastic so that the entire lighted sign can be as thin as only 1 1/8".  That is a dramatic improvement over the old style of reception area signage.

Typically the problem with a lighting lobby sign was that you either had to make the sign very thick, which means it looked cumbersome and may be a hazard to people trying to work/walk in the area, or you had "hot spots" where points of light were visible in the sign's face.

The old way looked bad. The new way is fantastic!

Basic - Routed Plastic Letters

Our routed plastic letters come in a variety of thicknesses, from 1/8" thick to as much as 1" thick!

Plastic letters are CNC routed or laser cut (depending on the application) from a computer file to make precise letters.  The sides are then smoothed out for a precise finish.  Our plastic letters are:

• Precisely cut with straight lines and consistent arcs,

• Exactly as shown in our production drawings, and

• Have a durable and attractive finish.

Basic - Formed Plastic Letters

Formed plastic letters are a great way to have a durable, inexpensive sign for your business without sacrificing that professional look that you need.

These signs are not ideal for retail businesses, but great for commercial sites, industrial, offices, etc.

They have come in a great variety of styles and colors, sizes that range from 2" to 72" (custom sizes are also available for an even larger sign). In addition, they have many other benefits over signs:

• UV stable & fade resistant,

• 31 standard pigmented colors (they can be painted using our SignLux™ paint system for even more variety)

• Greater depth than a routed plastic letter (flat cut letter) without the weight,

• Both flat front and rounded edges are available, and

Add a Backer Panel and Improve Even the Best

The trouble with all individual letters is that the wall behind them can detract from the appearance of the sign.

If the wall is textured unevenly, the letters will be mounted unevenly.  Or, if the color that you want for the sign blends in with the wall you are attaching it to then you need something to separate the logo from the wall behind it.

If you frame the sign with an aluminium panel, either rectangular or cut to the shape of the sign, you can dramatically improve the overall appearance.

The panel can be painted, or even be brushed aluminium.

It looks even better if it is backlighted.

But it looks Best if it is both front and back lighted (see Diamondcast™ above.)

Glass Signs - Good - and a different look

Sometimes individual letters aren't the best for your business.

In these cases, a glass sign works very well. By custom forming the glass and adding decorative "barrel" standoffs we can create a beautiful sign for the lobby or entrance of any business.

• The edges are polished,
• The panel can have color, or clear (transparent), frosted, etc.
• Lettering can be flat or raised,
• Supports can have many different shapes and colors,
• Literally hundreds of different options!
